The Center for Digital Discourse and Culture (CDDC) began as college-level center at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University during 1998 in the College of Arts and Sciences, working with faculty in the Virginia Tech Cyberschool. Since 2003, the CDDC has continued its activities within the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. The CDDC provides one of the world's first university based digital points-of-publication for new forms of scholarly communication, academic research, and cultural analysis. At the same time, it supports the continuation of traditional research practices, including scholarly peer review, academic freedom, network formation, and intellectual experimentation.
During 2006-07, in service to a global community of scholars and researchers, more than 2,000,000 unique users accessed materials and sites hosted by the CDDC, including online journals, scholarly article collections, academic bibliographies, online learning modules, e-text repositories, online learning tools, professional society web sites, and historical archives. During this same time period, we estimate that our servers responded to more than 44 million requests for individual web pages, or about 100,000 per day.
On average, the CDDC transfers a total of more than fourteen gigabytes of data every day to its users. During 2006-07, our servers also transmitted many thousands of e-mails to a variety of scholarly listservs tied to academic outreach and research. Our aim is to be open to all forms of cultural, ideological, methodological, and scientific discourse, while encouraging diversity, interdisciplinarity, and academic excellence.
