The hallmark of the most exciting developments in contemporary social theory and research is that issues of space and culture are placed to the fore.The distinction of Space and Culture is its grounding in everyday life: the habitual, and the mundane practices which make up the material of contemporary culture.Space and Culture is a cross-disciplinary journal which fosters the publication of reflections on a wide range of socio-spatial arenas such as the home, architecture, urbanism and geopolitics. We encourage the application of contemporary theoretical debates in cultural studies, discourse analysis, post-colonialism to research on sexuality, migrant and diasporic identities, virtual identities and virtual citizenship.

Nel dibattito sulla diffusione delle nuove tecnologie di comunicazione in rete s’incontrano sovente posizioni estreme, teorie che prescindono dagli utilizzatori per sottolineare ipotesi sradicate dagli usi e distaccate dal sociale. Al posto di considerare l’esperienza delle persone si mette in risalto il rischio che l’implementazione di una nuova tecnologia o la diffusione di nuove forme di comunicazione possono provocare sul tessuto sociale. A questo proposito ciò che mi sembra interessate sottolineare é il fatto che tendiamo a confrontarci ancora con un discorso che pensa le dinamiche del cyberspazio da un punto di vista “cibernetico”, concentrandosi più sugli strumenti che sulle vere dinamiche d’interazione.

The neoliberal transition diminished the influence of public institutions and, consequently, created the basis for a continuing crisis that is most visible in cities. The effects of this crisis appear in many separate events that point out the inefficacy of today's city planning. These events are becoming more intense, frequent and more visible in the everyday life of the city. The city is disintegrating along the lines of infinite particular interests, torn apart by unrest and discontent. No one can predict where the next protest against some spatial intervention will take place -- the revolt is out of control. However, these revolts do not simply cause damage to the city; they are examples of how to act in this city. Since that system is based on conflict as the main mode of communication, we can speak of an emerging understanding of the city as a restless field of conflicts.

(recensione) Richard Sennett si è sempre occupato di tematiche legate alla vita urbana e alla complessità sociale privilegiando il punto di vista dell’individuo. Un motivo di fondo del suo lavoro è l’analisi delle profonde contraddizioni implicite nelle forme di liberismo economico che si sono andate affermando negli ultimi decenni. In generale Sennett ha messo in evidenza come le politiche liberiste hanno prodotto conseguenze nefaste sulle persone minandone il carattere morale, virtù che è elemento imprescindibile del pensiero conservatore e liberista.
