Radio libera Albemuth è uno dei romanzi più affascinanti di Philip Dick, una sorta di abbozzo, fra fiction e autobiografia, della splendida Trilogia di Valis ma soprattutto una visionaria anticipazione dell’immaginario della Rete. Geniale excursus filosofico-teologico, più che opera letteraria, questo libro rappresenta anche un punto di svolta nella poetica del grande scrittore di fantascienza: dalle catastrofiche visioni di un’umanità assediata dai simulacri che essa stessa ha creato (basti pensare allo scenario di Blade Runner), al messaggio di speranza e redenzione incarnato in una rete di comunicazione planetaria creata da una misteriosa e benevola entità. Un messaggio che un regime tirannico tenta in ogni modo di neutralizzare.
Quale migliore metafora di un’epoca come la nostra, in cui alle aspettative di partecipazione democratica, di universale condivisione di notizie, informazioni e conoscenze, di globalizzazione delle opportunità di sviluppo suscitate dai nuovi media (l’effetto Albemuth), ha fatto seguito la “controrivoluzione” di governi e corporation che vediamo quotidianamente dispiegarsi sotto forma di attacchi alla privacy, d’inasprimento delle leggi sulla proprietà intellettuale e dei tentativi di “normalizzazione” del flusso comunicativo autogestito da milioni di soggetti autonomi e indipendenti?
Ma il motivo della scelta non è solo “ideologico”: la citazione di Dick vuole anche anticipare l’intenzione di discutere - oltre che dei temi politici, economici e culturali ben noti ai lettori che approdano qui dalle pagine di Quinto Stato- delle figure dell’immaginario letterario, filmico e mediale che simboleggiano la straordinaria stagione di mutamenti che tutti noi stiamo vivendo.

La cultura politica odierna è affetta da un virus malevolo: mancanza di dibattito e partecipazione. Il processo democratico si è (meglio: è stato) sostanzialmente ridotto a dare deleghe in bianco, a tapparsi il naso nell'urna elettorale, o ancor peggio a far finta di nulla. In maniera indipendente da strutture o entità di qualsiasi tipo, questo spazio vuole sfruttare l'interazione del blog per avviare un esperimento di comunicazione a più voci. Una sorta di finestra aperta sulle potenzialità odierne insite nella riappropriazione del discorso culturale politico, dentro e fuori internet - onde impedire l'ulteriore propagazione di un virus che ci ha già strappato buona parte del processo democratico.

The theory of the Long Tail is that our culture and economy is increasingly shifting away from a focus on a relatively small number of "hits" (mainstream products and markets) at the head of the demand curve and toward a huge number of niches in the tail. As the costs of production and distribution fall, especially online, there is now less need to lump products and consumers into one-size-fits-all containers. In an era without the constraints of physical shelf space and other bottlenecks of distribution, narrowly-targeted goods and services can be as economically attractive as mainstream fare.
