Internet sta alla televisione come un aereo sta a un autobus: apparentabili, perché presentano una struttura (meccanica) simile, ma anche incommensurabili, per il tipo di persone che abitualmente se ne servono. Cosí, nonostante la somiglianza tra il monitor di un computer e quello di un televisore, Internet – che non a caso, per le sue caratteristiche, è stata definita una sorta di «intelligenza collettiva» – non ha niente, o quasi niente, da spartire con la televisione cosiddetta generalista, il piú potente strumento di livellamento di massa che sia mai esistito….

Il dinamismo registrato nel settore degli audiovisivi su internet rappresenta la risposta delle imprese del settore della convergenza al verificarsi di alcune condizioni di carattere tecnologico, economico e sociale, quali la crescente disponibilità di accessi in larga banda, lo scenario competitivo che spinge i network e gli access providers a offrire nuovi servizi ad alto valore, l'evoluzione dello stile di fruizione degli utenti disposti a pagare per servizi di tipo simil-televisivo e sempre più abituati a un consumo on demand, etc.

The media do not cause indigenous people to acculturate to the dominant society, and actually help them resist acculturation.

In this paper, I will examine the question of the impact of television on the acculturation of indigenous people. Many anthropologists see television as a major causal force in the loss of indigenous culture. Through a research questionnaire, I surveyed 20 Lakota Sioux, and followed this up with unstructured interviews. They were questioned about their TV viewing habits and their interest and involvement in their own culture. I also conducted ethnographic interviews with other reservation residents on their perceptions of television. My findings suggest that TV does not play a role in acculturation of the Lakota people, and that it could even play a role in cultural preservation. This further suggests that anthropologists may need to revise some of their assumptions about technology’s effects on indigenous people.
